'Mode Coop', Episode 2 – Music, Video Games, and Movies

After bringing together Thomas Jolly and Salomé to discuss Assassin's Creed, their careers, art, and video games, 'Mode Coop' returns with an episode dedicated to music and sound, at the intersection of cinema and video games. Jérôme Rebotier, composer of the original soundtrack for The Count of Monte Cristo (2024), meets Florian, sound designer for The Crew, based at the Ivory Tower studio. What do our two guests have in common? Their love of rock, their passion for cinema, and their admiration for the unique sound of Baschet sculptures...

For music and sound lovers

From the techniques used by sound designers to produce the roar of a T-Rex to Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the American anthem at the Woodstock festival in 1969, and the immersive nature of sounds in open worlds like Assassin's Creed or Far Cry, the two enthusiasts shared a wealth of anecdotes, discussed their favorites, debated, and most importantly, talked about their own experiences.

Sit back and relax: discover the behind-the-scenes of the creation of the original soundtrack for The Count of Monte Cristo, and learn more about how to shape the sound environment of a video game!

Seven works to (re)discover, according to a composer!

Throughout their discussion, our two guests referenced many works... Didn't have time to note them all down? Here are seven of the most notable ones:

  • Star Wars
This iconic saga needs no introduction, nor does the fantastic work of John Williams on the film's music, not to mention the emblematic sounds of the lightsaber or R2D2. By the way... Do you know how the sound of the TIE fighter was created? Don't worry, Florian tells you all about it!

  • First Man
This film, adapted from Neil Armstrong's biography, was released in 2018. One of its strengths is its poignant music, composed by Justin Hurwitz. The film's main theme, presented in four different versions in the soundtrack, was one of Jérôme Rebotier's references for creating the music for The Count of Monte Cristo, especially for 'Le Trésor'.

  • Psycho
This Alfred Hitchcock film, a classic of cinema, features a haunting soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann (his musical partner), which contributes to the film's suffocating atmosphere. It's the pinnacle of the collaboration between the two men and perhaps Herrmann's most famous score.

  • The Story of Souleymane
Awarded at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and the 2025 César Awards, this film impressed our guests for a specific reason: the sound work. Indeed, a special place is given to the city's noises, used to pace the film and create tension. They replace the use of music, stand on their own, and manage to carry the viewer from one end of this 'Parisian thriller' to the other.

  • The Zone of Interest
Awarded the Oscar for Best International Film and Best Sound, this 2023 war drama revisits the horrors of the Auschwitz concentration camp from the perspective of Rudolf Höss, a senior SS officer, and his family, whose daily life we follow in their sumptuous house with a garden, located in the camp's interest zone. The setting seems idyllic at first glance, and to protect his family, Höss does everything to make the camp's atrocities invisible... but all the horror is in the sound (sensitive souls abstain).

  • Myst
A series of puzzle video games, the first of which was released in 1993, often praised for their soundtrack quality. The Myst games give a special place to music and sound, which play a crucial role in solving certain puzzles.

  • Halloween
John Carpenter, armed with his synthesizer, composed the music for most of his films. Known especially for its musical theme, the Halloween soundtrack is minimalist, unsettling, close to the image... it is in pure Carpenter style and has undeniably marked the history of cinema.
