Welcome back to the Motorsports Vehicle Series! This week, we’re leaving the asphalt behind for the rip-roaring world of aerobatics and smoke trails.
Those with a penchant for freestyle and air race events will need some seriously gutsy equipment to make it to the top, and in this respect you’ll be hard pushed to beat the Zivko Edge 540 V3.
Zivko’s dominance over professional aerobatics is such that it has long been the favorite manufacturer for world-class competitors. Much of this is due to their one-seater aircraft’s lightweight, yet highly durable fuselage. Computer-designed and extensively fatigue-analysed, they’re made from a 4130 steel tube frame and full carbon fiber body to keep weight minimal.
One particular Zivko innovation that took the aerobatics scene by storm was its use of a straight-edge wing on the original Edge 540. This has since been refined and developed further, and is now recognised as a pioneering design in the sport.
The V3 is a later version of this original aircraft. In addition to increased tolerance of G-loads, the body has been upgraded to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag. It boasts a modified Textron-Lycoming AEIO-540 engine, putting out 340bhp at 2900 rpm – a significant amount of power for such a light plane.
