Creative Spotlight #9: CaptBombastic

The Rainbow Six community has many outstandingly creative people that continue to amaze us with their creative, funny and astonishing contributions. In our Creative Spotlight series, we highlight these community members and give you an inside look into their lives!

For this Creative Spotlight we sat down with CaptBombastic, a community artist who not only creates beautiful artwork of our operators, but also streams the game. Find out who the person behind those expressive pieces is and where he gets his inspiration from!

Hello CaptBombastic! Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us!

Please introduce yourself and tell us - who are you outside of Rainbow Six Siege?

CaptBombastic: Hello, I am CaptBombastic and I stream and create fan art for Rainbow Six Siege. Outside of the Rainbow Six community, I work as a banker in Canada. I also like to watch movies, TV shows and anime as well as reading books from time to time.

What got you into art and when did you start?

CaptBombastic: I’ve started drawing ever since I was able to pick up a crayon and haven’t stopped since. I feel like I’ve just never lost interest in art and don’t think I will in the future. It is a way for me to express myself. Some of my favorite pieces I have worked on are the ones that tell a story.

How do you choose what you want to draw and what is your process of creating fanart?

CaptBombastic: Sometimes I draw characters for their aesthetics but for my bigger projects, I choose operators with a deep lore. The history behind the two Bosak sisters and the death of their father or Maverick’s adventures in Afghanistan are two examples of lore I find inspiring to draw. As for creating a piece, I usually try to come up with an image in my head: what pose will the character have and what type of lighting or colors I am going to use? Then I usually go into the game and take a bunch of screenshots of the character and guns I plan on drawing. After that it's a matter of getting the character anatomically correct and making sure the shadows make sense.

What’s the longest time you ever spent on a Rainbow Six artwork and which one was it?

CaptBombastic: I think the longest time I’ve spent on a Rainbow Six artwork was around a month and a half. That would be the piece of Ela and Zofia standing in front of their father’s gravestone. It actually would have taken longer but I wanted to finish it for the fan art gallery at the Six Invitational 2019.

Tell us about your best Rainbow Six Siege experience!

CaptBombastic: My best Rainbow Six experience was definitely attending the Six Invitational 2018 and 2019. I got to meet lots of great people in person—previously which I’ve only talked to on social media before. Furthermore, I was also able to speak with some of the developers who helped bring this game to life.

What is your favorite game from your childhood?

CaptBombastic: My favorite game growing up has to be “Assassin's Creed II”. It was the first RPG I’ve ever played, and it sparked my interest in story driven games. The graphics of the game were amazing for its time and I remember falling in love with the design, the overall aesthetic and the characters.

Next to creating amazing artwork, you also stream while playing Rainbow Six Siege. Tell us more about that!

CaptBombastic: I first got the idea of streaming when I went on the Ubisoft Star Player trip to PAX West in 2018. A lot of the other Star Players there were streamers and naturally we had conversations regarding streaming. Afterwards I tried it myself and while I do enjoy it overall, I felt kind of awkward at the beginning. That’s because it feels like you’re being watched all the time but the more you get used to it, the more confident you get. It’s always nice to start the stream and chat with all the awesome people that visit my stream.

You have quite a unique art style. What or who inspired it?

CaptBombastic: Growing up I’ve always been interested in superhero comic books, but when I got into my late teens, I started watching anime. So I’d say my art style is a mix between those two. There have been specific studios and people that shaped my style as well, such as Kyoto Animation, the animation studio that created “Violet Evergarden” and “A Silent Voice”, or Yoji Shinkawa, the concept artist behind the “Metal Gear” series.

Which movie or TV series do you think everyone should watch?

CaptBombastic: One movie I’d recommend everyone to watch would be “Maquia: When the Promise Flower Blooms” with its great aesthetics. On the surface, it’s a touching tale of a mother raising her son. However, if you dig deeper, you’ll find poignant themes like genocide, abuse and what it means to live. This movie has changed my perspective on certain aspects of life and I’m sure it will influence many others as well.

What would you like to see regarding the future of the game?

CaptBombastic: I’m very happy with the progress that has been made by the developers to make this game enjoyable for everyone. One thing I personally would like to see added to the game are more cosmetic customization possibilities. I’d love to customize an Operator’s shirt, pants and vests individually and play G.I. Joe dress up with my characters, so I think that would be neat. As for the current state of the game, I am happy to see where it's at and I see a bright future for it.
