It seems like nothing can stop G2 Esports when it comes to Rainbow Six: Siege. It started nearly two years ago, with a win at the Season 4 Pro League Finals. This victory was quickly followed up by another in Season 5. Then came the crowning moment for the team as they took home the Six Invitational 2018 title, and went on to secure wins at the Six Major Paris, the Season 8 Pro League Finals, and DreamHack Winter. Now, G2 Esports has become the first-ever team to win the Six Invitational, or any Major, back-to-back.The European squad entered the tournament after a mixed performance during the most recent Pro League season. . While they had very recently won in Rio de Janeiro and Jönköping, they did perform up to expectations during the first-half of Pro League IX.. Winning only two matches during the season was an unexpected performance from such an illustrious team.
G2 Esports would receive their sternest test during the main event, and face what might have arguably been their first realistic danger of elimination at the hands of North American team Spacestation Gaming. Not only would SSG win Clubhouse (on the final round of overtime) they would also be just one 1v1 away from tying things up and forcing overtime on the final map. However, G2 would prove too strong and progress to the semi-finals against Team Reciprocity. Hot of the heels of a victory against Evil Geniuses, Team Reciprocity would be brushed aside in a stunning 14-4, as it seemed that G2 had finally hit their stride.
Moving to the Grand Final, they would face their fellow Europeans from Team Empire, and for the first time ever, audiences and players alike would get a taste of infinite overtime. With G2 Esports having a 17-0-1 record on Coastline since 2018, it seemed that Empire had severely miscalculated when deciding to take them to their favourite map. However, Empire was more than happy to prove fans and analysts wrong. In a back-and-forth map where neither team was able to shake off the other and establish more than a one-round lead, G2 Esports were pushed all the way to the 22nd round before they were able to win -- just two rounds shy of total rounds during the Six Major Paris Grand Final, where they beat Evil Geniuses.
Following this, Empire unfortunately seemed to lose steam after that marathon of a first map. G2 won 7-4 on their map pick of Border. Oregon and Clubhouse would not even see play as G2 Esports brushed aside Empire on Bank with a 7-1 scoreline. The incredible 3-0 victory means that not only has this current roster now won every type of event (Pro League, Six Major, DreamHack, Invitational), but its core has also become the only team to ever to defend the title of World Champions after Evil Geniuses’ failed attempt last year.
G2 Esports are without a doubt the greatest team to have ever played Rainbow Six: Siege. With spirits boosted, the team will return to Europe to try salvage their Pro League campaign and secure a seat at the Season IX Pro League Finals in Milan.
