We're excited to welcome new players to the vibrant world of Ancient Greece in Assassin's Creed Odyssey during the free weekend, March 19–22!
To get you started, we've gathered some valuable tips and tricks from members of the Mentors Guild and the Assassin's Creed team.
1. Ikaros appreciation
When idling with the misthios's pet friend, Ikaros, on your hand, you'll be able to pet him and give him treats by pressing Y/Triangle on consoles, or press F on PC to pay respect. Be sure to show him some appreciation of the hard work he's performing day in and day out for you. He's a good bird.
2. Photos Are Forever
Capture your best moments and favorite spots during your ACOD adventure with Photo mode, which can be accessed by pressing LS + RS / L3 + R3 with controller or F3 on PC.
You can access your photos on the world map or via the dedicated Photo mode website. We're also running a Photo Mode Contest during our free weekend, so be sure to check it out.
3. Save Your Drachmae!
As an aspiring misthios, you'll quickly and substantially grow your gear repertoire and exchange old gear for newer, higher-level gear during your journey through Ancient Greece. Our recommendation is to save up your precious drachmae at the beginning of the game, rather than investing in gear or upgrades immediately. You'll thank us later. Now, you're probably wondering what would be a good investment, right? Consider Loadouts and Engravings, which are a fantastic transition to our next two tips.
4. Accommodating Different Playstyles
In Assassin's Creed Odyssey, you'll be able to choose between three major playstyles: Warrior, Hunter, and Assassin. In order to be as best prepared for various encounters, you'll want to create custom loadouts that can cover different playstyles so you can easily switch between them during a fight. You may want to check out the community-created AC-builds website for some build inspiration.
Tip: Head over to Ubisoft Club and unlock the Eagle Kopis weapon and other rewards.
5. Transmog
As you find different gear during your travels, you might prefer the visual look of one item over the other, but the stats may be low. Don't let this prevent you from going with the better gear, as Assassin's Creed Odyssey features a Visual Customization System that allows you to change the appearance of your gear and weapons while keeping their original stats. This feature is directly available from the inventory and doesn't cost any drachmae. You can change visuals at any time!
6. Engravings Are the Way Forward
As the aspiring warrior you are, you'll want to invest in some powerful engravings that will boost your character stats. The best way to do so is to become a regular at Hephaistos's Workshop.
Hephaistos's Workshop is located in the Myson Cave (Mallis region) and provides the following services:
Learn – Allows you to view all existing engravings in the game and purchase them with drachmae.
Upgrade – You can upgrade your gear to Engravings of Tier 6 and 7.
Engrave – As with every blacksmith in the game, you can engrave gear at Hephaistos's Workshop to enhance your weapons.
Note: Be sure to synchronize the Ruins of Artemis viewpoint nearby to be able to fast travel easily to the workshop.
7. The Aegean, the Adrestia, and You
To fully explore Assassin's Creed Odyssey's Ancient Greece you'll need to feel the sea breeze against your skin while sailing to new horizons or engaging in intense, fast-paced naval battles.
You'll be given your very own ship, the Adrestia, not too long after setting foot in Kephallonia. Heightened mobility of the Adrestia allows for quicker turns and speed boosts to dodge incoming attacks or to destroy the opposition by cleaving boats in half. You can also board enemy ships and
eliminate their remaining crew. Either option gives you sweet loot opportunities! Rule of thumb: the larger the ship, the larger the reward.
To aid naval combat, you'll be able to recruit a crew from the open world to accompany you on your journey through Ancient Greece. Recruited Lieutenants may have added abilities that can provide your ship extra boosting speed or stamina. By investing in the Call to Arms ability from the Assassin ability tree, you can call a member from your crew into combat on the mainland as a distraction or fight alongside them.
8. Become a Beast Master!
In order to tame animals, you'll have to unlock the "Beast Master" ability–located in the Hunter tree– and upgrade it. As you master your ability, you'll be able to tame wolves, lynxes, lions, and bears. Tamed animals are limited to one at a time and it's not possible to tame elite animals.
Once you have the ability unlocked, you'll have to knock the animal out. The easiest way to do so is to go into the fight bare-handed.
9. How to Pet a Tamed Animal
Yes, a tamed animal can be pet in Assassin's Creed Odyssey! Follow these instructions if you want to pet your new best friend:
- Tame an animal.
- Approach it and position yourself in front of it.
- Wait for the animal to acknowledge your presence.
- If positioned correctly, the misthios will start to pet the animal.
- Best friend status achieved.
