Interview with the German SwordMaster: Stefan Dieke

When traveling to Gamescom a couple weeks ago, we had the chance to attend a German longsword seminar at the Alte Kampfkunst School (http://www.alte-kampfkunst.de/) , in Wuppertal, Germany. There, we met with teacher Stefan Dieke, who showed us the basic techniques of the German school of fencing, based on the teachings of legendary 14th-century master Johannes Liechtenauer. The German longsword is a very polyvalent weapon, and it allows you to throw very powerful attacks, but also to defend yourself very well because it acts like a shield at the same time.

These techniques are very important for us as they inspired a lot of moves and stances of our Warden character. You can see a lot of similarities between the Warden’s fighting style and what we see in old German fencing books. His weapon, the longsword, is obviously inspired by them, but also his stances: the left and right default stances but also the upper “Ox position”.

In this video, we asked a couple questions to M. Dieke about the influence of the German School of fencing, but also what inspired him to teach these techniques.
